P.S. 89 yard will open to the public

Someday, children will be able to enjoy P.S./I.S. 89’s schoolyard every day. The Battery Park City schoolyard has just been listed among the 290 yards Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to include in his PlaNYC Schoolyards to Playgrounds Initiative. The goal of the $111 million plan is to have every New Yorker live within 10 minutes of a park. The B.P.C. schoolyard will not help achieve that goal since it is across the street from the neighborhood ballfields, but it will add a public playground to Lower Manhattan – a desire of many Downtown parents. A Parks Department spokesperson said it is not yet known when the P.S./I.S. 89 yard would open.
