“Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens” will be performed one night only at Pace University in the Eddie Layton Student Union on Tues. Nov. 21 at 8 p.m.
The student-driven performance chronicles the experiences of people who died from AIDS through a compellation of over 30 free-verse poems and songs performed with a backdrop of blues, jazz and rock music. It features characters of varying ages and backgrounds and was inspired by the Names Project AIDS Quilt.
Senior Ashley Marinaccio, director of “Elegies,” said that being a theater and sociology/anthropology major as well as a long-time AIDS activist made this production a perfect fit.
“I’ve wanted to do this since I was a 10th grader in high school,” she said. “It also coincides with global AIDS Awareness Month.”
“I think that people forget that AIDS is still an issue because in America, at least, people are living longer and are better able to deal with it because of the drugs,” she said. “We forget that in places like Africa it’s a pandemic.”
The admission is free with a suggested $5 donation, which will benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
