Photographer Steve McCurry signed copies of his most famous photograph and perhaps National Geographic’s most famous cover last week at the New York County Lawyers’ Association in Lower Manhattan. The photo of Sharbat Gula appeared on the June 1985 cover and was used many times in magazine promotions. After a long search, McCurry was able to track Gula down in Afghanistan and photograph her again in 2002 after her husband allowed her to remove her berka for the photo. Proceeds from sales of the signed posters are being donated to two nonprofit groups, Women for Afghan Women and ImagineAsia.
