The Downtown Alliance is inviting neighbors to “make Elizabeth H. Berger Plaza Bloom” on Sat., May 16, from noon to 2 p.m. by planting flowers around the plaza.
It is located at Edgar St., which is between Greenwich St. and Trinity Pl., just south of Rector St.
Berger, the former Alliance president who died August 2013, was a driving force behind the creation of the plaza and also helped Lower Manhattan rebuild after 9/11. She was also the frontrunner in an effort to help businesses and residents recover after Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
The former Edgar Plaza was named for Berger at the end of 2013. In a statement then, Robert Douglass, the Alliance’s chairperson, described Berger, a longtime FiDi resident, as “the soul of Downtown….
“She was a determined and effective advocate for all of Lower Manhattan. The plaza was created as a place for all residents to come together as a community, something Berger would have wanted.”
Downtown Alliance will provide the plants, soil and tools. Kids are also encouraged to join and there will be activities planned like face painting and balloon making. Light refreshments will also be available.
