Little Italy fire
Fire in a restaurant on the ground floor of a six-story tenement at the northeast corner of Mulberry and Hester Sts. on Tuesday afternoon April 27 brought 12 firefighting companies to Caffe Napoli. The blaze, attributed to an electrical connection in the ceiling, forced the employees and lunchtime patrons of the restaurant and residents of a second floor apartment to evacuate, but no one was injured, a Fire Department spokesperson said.
A.T.M. robberies
Police are looking for a suspect in a series of robberies in March at automated teller machines on the Lower East Side, the East Village and Murray Hill. The first was at 12:30 a.m. March 5 at a Washington Mutual A.T.M. at 835 Broadway at 13th St. when a man, 23, was forced to hand over $500. The robber struck at the same location again on March 19 at 1:15 a.m., forcing a woman to withdraw $500 which he took. On March 24 at 10 p.m., he robbed a 20-year-old woman of $20 at an A.T.M. at 126 Delancey St. A half hour later he robbed a woman, 27, of $100 at an A.T.M. at 450 Third Ave.
Police are looking for Jerome Collins, 25, a black man with a thin mustache, 5 ft. 8 in. and medium build in connection with the robberies.
Lower East Side D.O.A.
Kam Cheung, 50, was found unconscious at about 10 p.m. Mon. April 26 by family members in his apartment in the Baruch Houses at 50 Columbia St. and was declared dead by an Emergency Medical Service team who responded to the call, police said. The Medical Examiner’s office is investigating the cause of death.
Murder case reopened, report says
New York City police have reopened the unsolved murder of a housing police officer, Vito Chiaramonte, shot in Sept. 1977 at Delancey St. and F.D.R. Dr. in front of the Baruch Houses, according to a Daily News story.
Frederick Foley, 51, imprisoned in Germany for another homicide and extradited to Washington D.C. to face a child abuse charge, has indicated he can identify the Chiaramonte killer as a man who is currently in prison on an unrelated conviction, the story says. Police, however, declined to comment on the report that they intend to talk to Foley about the matter.
At the time of the shooting, Chiaramonte was under investigation with four fellow housing cops for robbing drug dealers.
Harbor rescue
A police helicopter unit, called by the Coast Guard during the early hours of Wed. April 21 for help in locating a 17-ft private boat that had engine trouble in Raritan Bay, spotted the missing craft in the Lower Harbor off Staten Island between Sandy Hook and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, police said. A Coast Guard vessel towed the boat with a man, his wife and their two daughters to Sandy Hook.
