Plead in murder attempt
Barbara Zellman, 62, pleaded not guilty last week to second-degree attempted murder and first- and second-degree assault in connection with the April 14 beating of her Jane St. neighbor, Miriam Sarzin, 67. Zellman was being held in lieu of $200,000 bail. Sarzin, who was admitted to St. Vincent’s Hospital with multiple skull fractures, two broken fingers, a smashed knuckle and severe bruises on her face, neck and back, has been released and is recovering at home, according to neighbors. According to Susan Brownmiller, a neighbor at 61 Jane St., Sarzin returned home a few days ago. Brownmiller said she had seen Sarzin walking slowly with her head covered, with her partner, Paula Feddersen.
Arrest in bank case
Sixth Precinct police apprehended Lawrence Johnson, 37, of Paterson, N.J., shortly after 3 p.m. Mon. May 10 at the corner of Jane and Hudson Sts. and charged him with attempting to rob the J.P. Morgan Chase Bank branch at 204 W. Fourth St. near Seventh Ave. S. Police said the suspect passed a note to a teller demanding money but fled without taking anything when the teller refused.
Assault on Grand St.
Police who responded to a 1:18 a.m. call on Wed. May 5 to an apartment at 460 Grand St. about a fight between a man and a woman arrested Lik Chan, 39, and charged him with third-degree assault. His victim was described only as a 32-year-old woman.
Sexual abuse
Ninth Precinct police arrested Omar Turner, 32, on Wed. May 5 and charged him with third-degree sexual abuse involving a girl, 15, at the East Side Community High School, 420 E. 12th St., two days earlier. Turner, a resident of Queens Village, was identified as a school employee working as a peer mediator. The girl was identified as a student.
