Fatal Bowery accident
An elderly woman crossing Bowery at Broome St. at 6:30 p.m. Wed. June 30 was struck by a car and died at Bellevue Hospital an hour later, police said. The driver was not arrested but was issued a summons for failing to exercise due caution. Police withheld the victim’s name pending family notification.
Hit-run death
A green SUV with tinted windows struck a pedestrian crossing Allen St. at the corner of Division St. and sped away at 5:40 a.m. Sat. July 3, police said. The victim Philip Chin, 56, of 1 Pike St., was taken to NYU Downtown Hospital where he was declared dead. There was no arrest and police are investigating.
East Village shooting
Alex Maldonado, 20, sustained a gunshot wound in the arm during a dispute on E. Third St. between Avenues B and C at about 12:30 a.m. Sat. July 3, police said. Maldonado, who lives in the neighborhood, phoned 911 after the shooting and was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was treated and released. There were no arrests and police are investigating.
Menacing
A Department of Parks and Recreation employee was charged with menacing a man with a baseball bat in East River Park at E. Sixth St. at 8 p.m., Tues. June 29, police said. Warren Drummond, 44, was also charged with weapon possession in the incident, which occurred during an argument, police said.
Counterfeit raid
Detectives from the Manhattan district attorney’s office raided a counterfeiting operation on Thursday morning July 1 at 405 Broadway south of Canal St. just as a van loaded with 2,750 counterfeit DVDs pulled up, law enforcement officials said.
Police arrested three suspects, two who had driven down in the van from the Bronx and one at the Broadway location. Nfa Doumbouya, 19, and Mohammed Komah, 18, who were in the van and Moussa Baide, 36, who was waiting in front of 405 Broadway, were charged with felony counts of trademark counterfeiting.
At the basement location, police seized 40,000 CDs, 25,000 DVDs and more than 1,000 phony designer-brand Vuitton, Prada and Gucci bags. At the same time, police raided the counterfeit factory in the Bronx and seized equipment and material used to make counterfeit CDs and DVDs.
Bias assault
A boy, 16, was beaten by two teenagers who made anti-white remarks to him at 6:30 p.m. Tues. June 20 in an elevator at 525 F.D.R. Dr. near Delancey St. in the Baruch Houses, police said. The suspects, described only as black teenage boys, held the victim in the elevator beyond his floor, punched and kicked him and fled, police said. The victim refused medical attention.
Gang assault
A gang of young men on W. Fourth St. near Barrow St. attacked and shouted antigay epithets at two men at 3:30 a.m. Sun. July 4, police said. The group of about 12 men fled and the two victims were treated at Cabrini Hospital and released. Police are investigating the incident.
East Village rescue
Police responding to a call on E. Sixth St. between Avenues B and C shortly before 8 p.m. Sat. July 3 found a man unconscious on the sidewalk and brought him to Bellevue. The victim, about age 40, was in serious condition but there was no evidence of criminality, police sad. The incident is under investigation.
