Sentenced in gang attack
Four young lesbian women from Newark convicted of stabbing and beating a man who insulted them on Aug. 18 last year outside the IFC movie theater on Sixth Ave. received prison terms on Thurs., June 14, of 12 to three years.
Judge Edward McLaughlin imposed a 12-year sentence on Patreece Johnson, 19, convicted of stabbing the victim, Dwayne Buckle, 29, who was selling DVDs of his films outside the theater when the incident occurred. Renata Hill, 25, was sentenced to eight years; Venice Brown, 19, received a five-year term; and Terrain Dandridge, 20, received three and a half years in prison.
Three other women involved in the assault on Buckle — Chenese Loyal, 19; Lania Daniels, 21; and Khamysha Coates, 31 — pleaded guilty to assault in February and received six-month sentences.
Wood assault
Police arrested Jerome Ashmore, 43, shortly before midnight Sun., June 10, at a bottle and can collection area of the Pathmark store, 227 Cherry St., and charged him with assaulting a woman, 52, who was collecting cans with him, police said. Ashmore had become angry and threw pieces of wood at his partner, hitting her in the head, arm and foot, police said. She was taken to the hospital with bruises. Ashmore, also charged with weapon possession, is to appear in court again June 28. Bail was set at $6,000 cash or a $12,000 bond.
Elderly man injured
Hazen Moorer, 78, identified by police as a Lower East Side resident, was found unconscious with severe head injuries at 10:20 p.m. Sat., June 16, outside the Bethune Gardens complex on St. Nicholas Ave., near W. 156th St. Moorer was taken to Harlem Hospital in critical condition. Police are investigating whether Moorer was the victim of a crime or had fallen accidentally and struck his head. He did not appear to have been robbed, according to reports.
Auto burglary plea
Carlos Gonzales, 46, caught rummaging through a car that wasn’t his on Broadway at W. 18th St. on Monday afternoon, June 11, pleaded guilty to robbery and criminal possession of a weapon on Fri., June 15, and was sentenced to a year in jail. The owner of the car confronted Gonzales, who jumped out of the vehicle with clothing he had taken. The owner followed Gonzales, who threw some of the clothing and then threatened to stab the owner with a knife. Police arrested Gonzales at the scene.
Too-hot Caliente
Ivan Zambrana-Jimenez, 19, a waiter at Caliente Cab Company, at 21 Waverly Pl. at Greene St., lost his temper and struck a patron in the face with a bottle at about 2:40 a.m. Sun., June 10, and was arrested on a second-degree assault charge, according to the office of D.A. Morgenthau. The victim, identified only as a man also 19, was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital for facial surgery. The suspect is to appear again in court Oct. 2 and is free on $2,500 bail.
Drinks like a fish?
Police arrested Isami Nagai, owner of Go Sushi on St. Mark’s Pl. and Hedeh, a restaurant on Great Jones St., and charged him with driving while intoxicated on First Ave. and E. 86th St. on Wed., June 13.
Also charged with resisting arrest and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, Nagai at first refused to take an alcohol breath test but when he did, the test registered twice the legal limit, according to the office of D.A. Morgenthau. It was the second DWI offense for Nagai, who was convicted of the violation in January 2006, which resulted in the revocation of his driver’s license in June 2006. He is to be arraigned in State Supreme Court on July 10.
Cab jumps curb
A cab whose brakes failed at about 5:10 p.m. Mon., June 18, jumped the curb onto a crowded sidewalk at E. 18th St. and Broadway, struck and seriously injured an elderly woman, hit a car at the curb and then hit another woman on a bicycle and finally stopped at a construction sidewalk bridge. The woman pedestrian was taken to the hospital in serious condition but the bicycle rider was not injured, according to witnesses. The cab driver told police that the brakes would not hold.
