Food Network star Sandra Lee is recovering Tuesday after undergoing a double mastectomy to treat her breast cancer, according to messages on her Facebook and Twitter pages.
Lee, 48, was driven to a local hospital by her long-time boyfriend, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and her sister, Kimber, to prep for the surgery. She was up before 4 a.m., according to her Facebook page.
“She was worrying most about her sister and the nursing staff- making sure they were comfortable. Did Kimmy need a sweater? Were the technicians shoes comfortable enough with so much standing? Did they all have breakfast?” her team wrote in a Facebook post.
Gov. Cuomo looked dapper in a collared shirt and tie underneath scrubs, looking at Lee and smiling, according to a photo her team shared after the surgery was complete.
“If it’s possible to look red-carpet ready in scrubs, they were THAT couple,” they wrote, later adding: “Check them out – stylish even in scrubs!”
The surgery started at about 8 a.m. and concluded at about 1 p.m., according to a statement from Cuomo. Lee was transferred from the recovery room to the hospital room where she was resting comfortably on Tuesday.
The procedure was initially scheduled for last week, but was postponed when Lee came down with an upper respiratory infection. The cancer was first detected in it’s early stages after a mammogram in March, the Semi-Homemade star said in an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America” last week.
“On behalf of Sandy and myself, I want to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers over the last few days,” Cuomo said in a statement after the surgery. “Your support has meant the world to us.”aa
