Seaport rink on ice for a few weeks

General Growth Properties has frozen plans to open a large ice rink at the Seaport for about two weeks, citing “unanticipated production issues.”

The rink was to open on one of the Seaport mall’s biggest days, Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving when retailers’ bottom lines traditionally go from red to black as holiday shopping begins in full force.

General Growth will go forward with its other holiday plans for this Friday including the reopening of its Seaport Chorus Tree at 6 p.m. with performances by the Big Apple Chorus and the Big Apple Circus.

Lincoln Palsgrove, the Seaport’s senior marketing manager, said they set an aggressive production schedule for the new rink, but certain materials arrived late, making it impossible to get the rink built and frozen by Nov. 28.

“While we are disappointed to have this last minute news, we will have the rink open in December without fail,” he told Downtown Express. General Growth is hoping to open the rink early in the month.
