The Villager’s art-and-design and advertising departments teamed up on four winning entries in the 2009 New York Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. Among them were second place for Best Small Space Ad, for an ad for activist Doris Diether’s 80th birthday, above left; the ad features the first photo of Scoopy II, which appeared in the New York World Telegram, back when Scoopy was a celebrity. Collaborating on the ad were Colin Gregory, The Villager’s retail ad manager, and graphic designer Jamie Paakkonen. The Villager also won second place for Best Newspaper Image Promotion for a house ad for the paper’s 2008 contest awards, above right. The Villager won third place for Advertising Excellence.
