The Chelsea Waterside Park playing field at 23rd St. on the east side of the West Side Highway will get a new artificial-turf surface next summer, thanks to a $500,000 grant by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.
The grant will also fund a perimeter fence around the field, used by schools and teams, including Xavier and Beacon High Schools, the Lab School and School of the Future, as well as Downtown United Soccer Club and Manhattan Soccer Club, Greenwich Village Little League, Doc’s NYC Youth Lacrosse and Play Rugby USA. About 15 adult leagues also use the field.
Work is planned for the summer of 2010 with completion expected in the fall, a Trust spokesperson said.
