The city Parks Dept. released this list of Lower Manhattan park projects and their funding sources.
1. Allen Street Mall Demonstration Project (ISTEA funded)
· Prototype redesign of mall with CDOT, complete between Delancey and Broome; construction to begin late summer/early fall.
· Parks is pursuing funding opportunities to rehabilitate all of the Allen and Pike Street Malls, to enhance Chinatown and links from it to the East River Waterfront.
2. Al Smith Playground (LMDC Funded)
· Park is in construction.
· Completion expected in July
· Elements include a multi-purpose artificial field, volleyball courts, new sports courts, rehabilitated gym floor and improved pathways.
3. Baruch Ballfield: (NFL Funded)
· A new synthetic athletic field is in design
· Construction is expected to start fall 2004.
4. Battery: (LMDC, Public and Private Funds)
Bosque: (LMDC Funded) $8.5 million
· Construction is expected to begin next month, with completion of gardens expected late October.
· The project will create a destination, with over 30,000 sq. ft of Piet Oudolf designed gardens.
· A carousel will be developed on site (through LMDC and private funding sources) at a later date.
5. Bowling Green Park (LMDC Funded)
· Renovation of the historic park, repaired bluestone sidewalks, restoration of the existing brownstone curb and landmark fence has begun.
· The park is expected to be complete on at end of April/beginning of May.
6. Brooklyn Bridge Plaza (LMDC Funded)
· Reclaimed Park.
· Construction to start shortly with completion expected by the end of December 2004.
· Elements will include upgraded sports courts, game tables, expanded seating and plantings, repaired lighting and rehabilitated brickwork.
· The park will serve as a link between Lower Manhattan and Chinatown and provide expanded active recreation.
7. Canal-Varick-Laight (Funded by Association of Landscape Contractors of America)
· Construction begun by Port Authority and City DOT, who have jurisdiction of the property. Preliminary excavation and temporary sidewalks laid.
· Parks & Recreation will oversee ALCA’s design of this new park, which will include a fountain, perimeter fencing, planting beds, tables and seating as well as street trees.
· Park construction is expected to begin May 1st and be complete in the fall.
8. Canal Park at West Street (Funded through State DOT)
· New passive park in construction.
· Completion is scheduled for Spring 2005
9. Coenties Slip: (LMDC Funded Park. Goldman Sachs has provided funds for a fountain)
· Anticipate starting construction in early April.
· Transform the existing temporary open space into permanent open space, making the site more park like with expanded plantings, improved seating; capturing more of the former roadbed.
· may develop a sculptural fountain for Coenties Slip.
10. Columbus Park (3 Separate Projects)
· Artificial Turf Ballfield work (funded through the Temeczko Foundation via City Hall) will start late July.
· Landscaping, Pathway and park expansion work (funded by the LMDC) will begin end of June and be complete by the end of the year. Parks is expanding the park along Baxter Street & Hogan Streets.
· The Historic Pavilion’s reconstruction (funded by a federal rant of $1 million, $328,000 by the LMDC, $250,000 from the Manhattan borough president, and $200,000 from Councilmember Gerson) is expected to start mid June, and be complete by end of the 2004.
11. Drumgoole Plaza: (LMDC Funded)
· New Park, completed in October 2003.
· Parks replaced concrete barriers with attractive bollards and fencing, expanded landscaping at the site, resurfaced it with Streetprint, increased lighting and added seating.
12. East River Park Ballfields (LMDC Funded.)
· Ballfields are in construction: 2 natural and 2 synthetic.
· Completion expected in early summer.

13. Hanover Square (Friends of the British Memorial Garden Funded)
· Construction expected to start this summer.
· In design, with a modern reinterpretation of British garden design elements, granite benches and topiaries.
14. Lillian Wald Park: (Councilmember & Borough President Funded)
· In construction, completion expected late August.
· Elements will include basketball, volleyball and handball courts with a small fitness area.
15. Old Slip (LMDC Funded)
· Construction to start end of March and be complete by early summer.
· Improvements will include rehabilitated plaza surfacing, new granite benches, expanded landscaping, Downtown Alliance lighting, and repaired granite bollards
16. Sara D. Roosevelt Park (LMDC Funded)
· Construction to start this month. Completion expected by end of the year.
· Elements will include a synthetic field at Canal Street and an artificial turf track, improved access to the park, and expanded landscaping.
17. Tribeca Park: (LMDC Funded Park. Assemblymember Glick Funded New Sidewalks)
· Park is in construction. Sidewalk project to follow.
· Elements will include expanded planting areas, new seating, granite curbs, new plaza pavement.
· Completion expected by June
18. Wall Street Park: (LMDC Funded Park. Deutsche Bank gave funds for a Fountain on site)
· New park between South and Water Street that is currently in construction, with structural glass seating, trees, new plaza pavement and granite curbs and planting beds.
· Construction completion is expected by the end of the May. Fountain will be later addition.
19. Washington Market Park
· Playground recently redone (Private Park Association Group funds).
· City and private funds then reconstructed other play elements
· A final phase, the irrigation of the lawns, will be completed (funded by the LMDC) in the next few months.
20. Sophie Loeb Playground (Private Developer Mitigation Funds) Approximately $500k
· In construction by private developer, who had staged construction on site.
· Playground reconstruction completion expected late April.
· Elements to include Playground, spray shower, perimeter fence, animal art and seating and landscaping.
21. Greenstreet at Canal & Avenue of the Americas
· Greenstreets has designed an improvement of more trees and special paving to dress up the sidewalk at the Northeast Corner of Canal Street and Avenue of the Americas (near the A/C exit of the Subway)
22. Duarte Square (Trinity Real Estate funded Appx. $1M)
· Design is underway
· Construction will be tied to the Building’s Construction
· As part of their redevelopment of the adjacent property, Trinity Real Estate will be improving and expanding Duarte Square.
