Is it 2023 again? Did the NFL time travel to when Aaron Rodgers went into a four-day darkness retreat to decide whether or not he wanted to retire? The reality is 2025, lightning has struck again and Adam Schefter is “hearing” that Aaron Rodgers might retire ahead of the 2025 season.
“I think they [Pittsburgh Steelers and Rodgers] need each other right now, and that’s if Aaron wants to play,” Schefter said on Milwaukee’s ESPN Radio. “I’m not convinced yet that he does until I hear him say, ‘I want to play.’ People have said to me, ‘Are you sure he wants to play?’ I’m not sure – I’m hearing he might not want to play.”
Schefter then added, “I don’t want to speak for him because I don’t want to get called out, but we’re speculating. It shouldn’t be that hard – It’s either you want to play for the Steelers or you don’t.”
Rodgers wasn’t traded to the New York Jets until April and his saga went on for three months. The New York Giants moved on and decided to go in their own direction on Tuesday, signing Russell Wilson to a one-year deal worth up to $21 million with $10.5 million guaranteed.
The Giants also added Jameis Winston to the team on a backup quarterback deal for two years, worth $8 million. A move for a starting quarterback was in the cards after signing Winston, considering he received lower-end backup money.
Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was asked about Aaron Rodgers, since he’s been linked to the team over the last couple of weeks, especially since Sam Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks on March 10.
“I know [head coach Kevin O’Connell] and [Aaron Rodgers] have a great relationship still, they’ll still have a relationship and keep talking, but right now I’m focused on the two players that are in our room right now,” Adofo-Mensah said.
The NFL Draft begins on April 24, so the Steelers will need an answer from Rodgers relatively soon. Pittsburgh needs to know if they have to sign a veteran like Joe Flacco, and/or prepare to trade up for a guy like Jaxson Dart, the passer out of Ole Miss.
