New York Mets reliever Brooks Raley will be out “longer than anticipated,” according to manager Carlos Mendoza, as he continues recovering from a left elbow injury.
“It’s one of those where inflammation went down and he’s still playing catch, but he’s not going to be as quick as we thought it was going to be,” Mendoza told reporters on Thursday before the Mets’ series finale against the Chicago Cubs (h/t SNY). “We’re still going through some things with the medicals.”
Raley was originally placed on 15-day IL on April 21 due to what was described as elbow inflammation and was eligible to return from the IL next week. The southpaw will undergo another MRI but has continued throwing.
“We’re not going to be as aggressive as we thought when he went down originally,” Mendoza added.
The issue has thrown a wrench into Raley’s impressive start in 2024. He allowed just two hits across eight scoreless appearances (seven innings pitched) with nine strikeouts and three walks for a 0.714 WHIP.
The 35-year-old was one of the Mets’ most important and consistent bullpen arms during a disappointing year in 2023, posting a 2.80 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 54.2 innings of work.
