The Giants are making their first big move under new head coach John Harbaugh by releasing veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke when the new league year begins on March 11, per multiple reports.
With it, Big Blue will save $9 million in cap space — a necessary move considering the financial constraints they are facing this offseason, and the need to revamp the majority of a team that finished 4-13 last season.
Parting ways with Okerke will create a dead cap hit of $5.4 million, but there is added relief for an organization that had an estimated — and paltry — $1.7 million to $5.7 million in space to work with.
The 29-year-old was entering the final year of a four-year, $40 million pact he signed with New York in 2023, having led the team in tackles in each of his two healthy seasons. He was limited to just 12 games in 2024 due to a herniated disc in his back.
While he came back with a healthy campaign for the Giants in 2025, making 143 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, and two tackles for loss, it clearly was not enough for Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen to move forward with him at the heart of their defense.
The front of New York’s defense is in good hands. Dexter Lawrence is one of the best interior defensive linemen in the league, and the edge rush options are bountiful between Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Abdul Carter. But the inside linebacking corps is now on the verge of being completely shaken up, with Micah McFadden coming off foot surgery and also facing free agency.
Harbaugh and Schoen have a chance to pick up the best linebacker of the 2026 NFL Draft with the No. 5 overall pick. Ohio State’s Sonny Styles was a hit at last week’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Okereke, though, is expected to be just the first of numerous cap casualties over the next week. The legal tampering period will begin on Monday.
