The New York Yankees left their West Coast series with the Los Angeles Dodgers with some injury concerns. Left fielder Jasson Dominguez left Sunday’s win in the fifth inning after injuring his thumb while stealing second base.
Sunday night’s triumph, which avoided a sweep at the hands of the defending champions, was the Yankees’ ninth and final outing of their road trip. Dominguez put his side on the board first with a one-run single in the top of the first. His bat had been heating up as of late, recording a hit in four straight games.
This season, Dominguez is batting .247 while recording six home runs and 25 RBI — his first full chance at sticking in the majors after recovering from Tommy John surgery and an oblique issue. He also has eight steals this year.
Injuries have had a major impact on the Yankees’ season. Ace and former Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole underwent Tommy John surgery in the preseason, keeping him sidelined until 2026. Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton has experienced elbow injuries and is expected to make his season debut in the next couple of weeks.
Dominguez isn’t too concerned about the injury and says he’s feeling better already. He was wearing a protective glove on his right hand during the game, but injured his left as he slid into second base. He will be re-evaluated Monday, and his availability for Tuesday’s matchup against the Cleveland Guardians is up in the air.
With Dominguez’s status uncertain and right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver hurting his hamstring during stretches, injuries continue to shake up rotations for the Yankees. Holding a 36-22 record and the top spot in the AL East, the Yankees are in a great spot with stars like Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Stanton expected to return.
