New York Mets designated hitter and outfielder Jesse Winker was lifted from Monday’s split-squad spring training game against the Tampa Bay Rays after he appeared to tweak his right calf during a first-inning at-bat.
Up in the count 3-0, the veteran lefty swung and popped out in foul territory. On the follow-through, he planted his right foot and immediately appeared to feel something. He favored his right leg while hobbling down the first-base line and then was seen grabbing at his calf while sitting in the dugout.
Following a short conversation with manager Carlos Mendoza, he collected his things and walked down the tunnel, ending his day early. Prized prospect Ryan Clifford replaced him.
Mendoza confirmed following the game that he had just felt cramping in his calf and that he “should be OK.”
“I feel better,” Winker added. “I’m not really too concerned about it.”
Signing a one-year, $8 million deal to stay with the Mets this winter, the 31-year-old is expected to hold more of a versatile role this season. He will platoon at the DH spot with Starling Marte and serve as a backup corner-outfield option should Brandon Nimmo or Juan Soto need defensive rest.
Winker was acquired from the Washington Nationals at last year’s trade deadline and was a notable postseason contributor during their run to the NLCS. He slashed .318/.531/.636 with one home run, four RBI, and seven walks in postseason play.
