The New York Jets travel south to battle the equally winless Miami Dolphins for the early game of a Monday Night Football doubleheader. The contest will kick off at 7 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium, as both teams try to remove the zero from the win column in 2025.
New York appears to have a matchup advantage in the run game, but with an expected real feel over 100 degrees in Florida on Monday, it could be some tough sledding running the football against the Dolphins. Fortunately for the Jets, their starting quarterback is set to hop back into the pilot seat on Monday night.
New York HC Aaron Glenn was not shaken by the Jets’ 0-3 start. Instead, he thinks the team is close to breaking out. “They’re starting to understand exactly how to win,” the head coach told the Jets website. “We just have to do a better job of getting over that hump and winning these games. And I know as we continue to progress during the season, those guys will do a good job with that.”
Justin Fields Set to Return in Miami
The first-year Jets quarterback will be returned to New York’s starting unit after he cleared concussion protocol on Saturday. Fields was a full participant for the Jets in practice this week. “We’re just as confident with either guy,” veteran NFL wideout Allen Lazard told the team website. “With Justin [Fields] and Tyrod [Taylor] we have the same amount of confidence.”
Fields has completed 19-of-33 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown in 2025, while utilizing his scrambling skills that have become a hallmark of his career. New York’s signal caller has recorded 17 carries for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Fields could find some room to dash against one of the worst rushing defenses in the NFL, as the Dolphins are ranked 28th against the run. Miami has allowed an average of 145 yards per game (YPG) after three games.
Breece Hall vs. Fishy Rushing Defense
Breece Hall recorded 107 yards in 19 carries in his first contest this season as the Jets narrowly lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1. Hall was bottled up by both the Buffalo Bills (29 yards on 10 carries) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (21 yards on nine carries) over the last two weeks.
Hall’s matchup against the Dolphins is a good one for the 24-year-old running back as he faces off against the 28th-ranked rushing defense in the NFL. Miami is allowing 145 YPG on the ground this season. It’s quite the change for Mike McDaniel’s squad, who finished last season as the eighth-best run-stopping unit in the NFL. Miami is allowing 1.33 opponent rushing touchdowns this season, so one of Fields or Hall should have a solid opportunity to find the end zone on Monday night.
Hall produced 57 yards on 12 carries in the 2024 regular season finale, a 32-20 Jets win in Week 18. His receiving touchdown sealed the game by extending New York’s five point lead to a 12-point advantage with 2:30 left in the game.
Jets Run Defense vs. De’Von Achane
Miami brings a dynamic running back, De’Von Achane, into the matchup against New York. While Miami’s running back has not scored a touchdown this season, he has recorded 147 yards on 30 carries for an average of 49 yards per game in 2025 and an average of 4.9 yards per carry.
New York’s defense had two looks at Achane during the 2024 regular season. The Jets limited the running back to 24 yards on 14 carries (and a touchdown) in their first meeting, a 32-26 overtime loss by New York. In the final game of the 2024 regular season, Achane racked up 121 yards on 11 carries in the Jets’ win in Week 18.
The Dolphins running back had six games with more than 70+ yards in 2024, including one against the Jets. If New York can limit the explosive plays like they did in their first meeting with Miami last year, the Jets will have far less turbulence soaring to their first victory of 2025.
