New York Mets center fielder Jose Siri will be placed on the injured list after an MRI revealed that he suffered a fractured tibia, the team disclosed following Monday night’s win over the Minnesota Twins.
Siri suffered the injury in the second inning of Saturday’s loss to the Athletics, where he needed to be assisted to the clubhouse by a golf cart. Manager Carlos Mendoza said on Sunday that he was in considerable “pain” and that he was on crutches.
The MRI on Monday afternoon revealed the full extent of the injury.
“It’s not really surprising,” Mendoza said. “Seeing how much pain he was going through and watching him walk, he could barely put any weight on it. That’s why we sent him for the MRI today and that’s what it showed.”
While no timetable for a potential return has been set, expectations are that the 29-year-old will be out for an extended period of time.
No call-up has been made to take Siri’s roster spot as of Tuesday morning, and Tyrone Taylor will slot in as the starter in center field for the time being.
Brandon Nimmo is also capable of playing center field — meaning Jesse Winker and Starling Marte could get more corner-outfield reps — but so is infielder Luisangel Acuna, who was told by Mendoza to take reps at the position during batting practice.
“Tyrone will continue to get a lot of opportunities,” Mendoza said. “We’ll prepare Winker to get more and obviously Marte, so we feel good with our outfield depth. It’s unfortunate for Siri, but we like what we have here.”
