The New York Giants remain interested in Los Angeles Rams veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, who could be on the trade market due to the weight of his cap hit out west.
With the Giants in desperate need of a quarterback to both contend and potentially save the jobs of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, Stafford has been on Big Blue’s list for quite some time.
A report from ESPN’s Jordan Raanan revealed that the Giants checked in on Stafford’s availability with the Rams prior to the NFL’s Nov. 5 trade deadline. Now, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, they are one of several teams who have expressed interest in trying to work out a deal for Stafford.
The quarterback position is the Giants’ largest priority this offseason after cutting ties with Daniel Jones and finishing the season with a trio of quarterbacks — Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock, and Tim Boyle — who are nowhere near a solution under center moving forward.
Holding the No. 3 pick at the 2025 NFL Draft in April, the Giants could potentially come away with one of the top two passing talents available in Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. There is a chance, though, that both are off the board, considering the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns, who own the Nos. 1 and 2 picks, could use a quarterback, as well.
Should the Giants miss out on either Ward or Sanders, a veteran quarterback to serve as a temporary bridge, whether that be for one or two years, could be the move for them — and Stafford has certainly piqued their interest.
The 37-year-old is still a serviceable passer, throwing for 3,762 yards with 20 touchdowns compared to just eight interceptions last year. But he is set to carry gargantuan cap hits of $49.7 million in 2025 and $53.7 million in 2026 — a contract that would have to be reworked if he were to stay with the Rams.
Should those talks fail to materialize or gain traction, a trade becomes the most likely outcome, albeit later in the spring.
While the Giants’ front office likes Stafford, one of their bright young stars is also a big fan of him. On Matthew Berry’s Fantasy Football Happy Hour, wide receiver Malik Nabers sang the praises of the veteran passer.
“His arm talent is crazy,” Nabers said. “His sidearm is crazy. The way he throws the ball, his angles, it’s crazy. He knows the defense. He’s a veteran quarterback. He led that team to the playoffs without those receivers he was playing with at the beginning of the season when they were hurt. Then, when he got them back, he was able to do a lot of great things. I like the way he throws the football.”
