New York Red Bulls star forward Lewis Morgan is eyeing a mid-May return from a knee injury suffered in late March, a source confirmed with amNewYork on Wednesday, which further suggests that head coach Sandro Schwarz’s most recent timetable was, in fact, accurate.
Before Saturday’s 1-0 victory over CF Montreal, Schwarz said the hope was for Morgan to return to training in two weeks. A source proceeded to tell amNewYork that last week, the 28-year-old Scottish playmaker was looking at a three-week wait before being available.
That would put his potential return near New York’s May 14 mid-week clash at Nashville SC.
“He really wanted to be back for [Inter] Miami,” the source said, referencing the Red Bulls’ trip to take on Lionel Messi on Saturday. “But that was just not going to be possible.”
The Red Bulls have sorely missed his goal-scoring abilities, even with the high-profile offseason signing of former Bayern Munich and PSG striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Through 10 matches this season, only New England, Toronto FC, and Montreal have scored fewer goals than New York’s 11 among Eastern Conference clubs.
Morgan initially suffered the injury in training ahead of New York’s home opener on April 1, which required surgery. After winning the 2024 MLS Comeback Player of the Year award, in which he overcame a significant hip injury that also required surgery in 2023, scoring 13 goals with seven assists, he has appeared in just one game this season.
His play last season earned him a long-awaited return to the Scottish National Team, appearing in the 2024 European Championships and in the UEFA Nations League.
