QUEENS, NY — The remainder of New York Mets relief pitcher Reed Garrett’s 2025 season is in jeopardy after he was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to Sept. 15, with a right elbow sprain.
He is expected to undergo imaging to reveal the full extent of the issue, but manager Carlos Mendoza did admit that this is “concerning,” especially because the right-hander just recently returned from a two-week IL stint for inflammation in that same elbow.
“He continued to have a hard time recovering after every time he pitched,” Mendoza said. “[Wednesday] night, we got him hot, and as he was getting loose in the bullpen, we shut him down.”
A 15-day IL designation obviously ends his season, as the earliest he could be allowed to return would be Sept. 30 — two days after the regular season. His postseason availability largely rests on the results of the imaging that was scheduled for Thursday, but the area in which the 32-year-old continues to struggle is as delicate a spot as any for a pitcher to deal with.
“I think when you’re talking about an elbow, even if we get a best-case scenario, you’re still looking at a shutdown period,” Mendoza said. “And then, we’re getting close to running out of time. The biggest thing for me, for us, is praying for the best.”
Entering the season as a middle-relief option that could step in at high-leverage situations, Garrett has struggled to be a reliable option out of the Mets’ bullpen. He has a 3.90 ERA with 64 strikeouts and 26 walks in 55.1 innings pitched this season. He turned in three scoreless outings out of a possible four since he returned from his previous IL stint on Sept. 7.
In corresponding moves, the Mets selected Wander Suero to the MLB roster and promoted Chris Devenski from Triple-A. Dom Hamel, who made his MLB debut on Wednesday night, was designated for assignment, while Sean Manaea was placed on the paternity list.
It is unclear as of Thursday if Manaea’s departure impacts his availability for Sunday, where he is expected to join forces with Clay Holmes once again after the two successfully kept the Padres in check on Tuesday night.
