The New York Yankees are promoting their top prospect, George Lombard Jr., to Double-A Somerset, which was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan following the Bronx Bombers’ series loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

The 19-year-old had been raking in High-A ball to start the 2025 campaign — just his second with the organization after being drafted 26th overall in 2023. In 24 games (82 at-bats), he was batting .329 with a .496 on-base percentage, .983 OPS, one home run, 13 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and 23 walks compared to 22 strikeouts.

A natural shortstop, Lombard is also getting looks at second and third base, which will open up more avenues for promotion through the Yankees’ system — and perhaps one day create a left-side infield partnership with Anthony Volpe.

At spring training, he posted an .808 OPS and caught the eye of team captain Aaron Judge.

“I was really impressed,” Judge said. “Seeing him move over to third base, he’s got a great arm. He was accurate. He was hitting every single guy in the chest. Smooth hands; Anthony Volpe is one of the best shortstops I’ve ever seen, and you put [Lombard] right next to him at third base; it’s pretty cool to see that on the left side of the infield.”
