Jasson Dominguez’s bases-clearing, three-run double lifted the New York Yankees to their second straight win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night in the Bronx.
With the Yankees (10-7) trailing by two entering the sixth inning, Royals starter Michael Wacha — who had gone five scoreless while allowing just three hits — yielded a lead-off single to Aaron Judge, got two quick outs, then walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe to load the bases.
In came reliever Angel Zerpa, who walked Austin Wells to halve New York’s deficit. Dominguez then turned on a 1-2 four-seamer on the inner half of the plate and lined it down the left-field line to clear the bases and give the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.
Starter Max Fried picked up the win and kept the Yankees’ pitching momentum moving in a positive direction. The lefty ace went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Through his first three starts as a Yankee, he is 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA.
The Royals did all their damage against Fried in the third inning. MJ Melendez led off the frame with his first home run of the year, taking the second pitch he saw 429 feet. With two outs, Maikel Garcia singled and came around to score when Bobby Witt Jr. doubled into the right-center-field gap.
