The Arizona Diamondbacks scored twice in the seventh inning off struggling reliever Ryne Stanek and twice more in the ninth inning to defeat the New York Mets 4-3 on Wednesday night at Citi Field and keep them from making a bit of baseball history.

A win would have made the Mets (21-10) the first National League team to ever win 20 games in the month of April. Instead, Geraldo Perdomo’s pinch-hit two-run single in the seventh inning off Stanek put New York behind for good.

Trailing 4-1 in the ninth after Arizona plated two more via sacrifice flies, the Mets pulled within one when Tyrone Taylor homered and Jesse Winker’s groundout with the bases loaded added another. But D-Backs closer Ryan Thompson was able to strike out Francisco Alvarez with the sacks full.

The Mets could only muster one run against ace pitcher Corbin Burnes, who earned his first victory with the Diamondbacks after signing with them in free agency over the winter. Mark Vientos hit his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the third to give New York a slim lead.

Burns yielded just four hits but walked five and balked while striking out three.

Mets opener Huascar Brazoban and lefty Brandon Waddell combined to throw 6.1 shutout innings before Lourdes Gurriel Jr. singled off Stanek with two outs in the seventh. Jorge Barrosa doubled

Mets opener Huascar Brazobán and left-hander Brandon Waddell combined for 6 1/3 shutout innings, but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. grounded a single off scuffling reliever Ryne Stanek (0-3) with two outs in the seventh.

Stanek was saddled with the loss, a decision he has now taken in each of his last three outings.

The Mets ended April by going 13-2 at home and 19-8 overall.
