Trying to cross a busy Bronx intersection proved deadly for a 56-year-old man who was struck and killed by a driver operating a box truck Saturday afternoon, police reported.

Law enforcement sources said the deadly incident happened at 4:59 p.m. on Nov. 16 at the corner of Bronx River and Westchester Avenues.

According to information that police obtained, the unidentified victim was attempting to cross Bronx River Avenue as an Isuzu box truck, a 70-year-old man, began turning onto the roadway from eastbound Westchester Avenue.

As the truck turned, authorities said, the pedestrian fell onto the rear passenger side of the truck, falling to the pavement. He was then run over by the truck’s rear wheels.

The truck driver stopped and remained at the scene following the incident, police said.

Officers from the 43rd Precinct and EMS units responded to a 911 call about the incident and found the 56-year-old pedestrian with severe trauma to his torso. Paramedics rushed him to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have withheld his identity, pending family notification.

No charges have been filed against the truck driver at this time. The case is now being handled by the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad.
