Roberta's Pizza rumored to hit the Rockaways: our topping picks

News broke Monday that Roberta's Pizza, the most Brooklyn restaurant in Brooklyn, may be opening up a second location in Queens. At Beach 96th Street in the Rockaways, to be exact. (The pizzeria had a beach-side stand last summer.)

So that got us thinking: What kind of pizza do we want to eat at the beach? These are the toppings that are already haunting our beach-pizza dreams.

Beach pizza topping #1: cilantro crema

Rockaway Taco is right across the street from the rumored Roberta's location, and we don't see the two being competitors but rather like-minded friends in delicious, delicious food service. Maybe Roberta's can grow the cilantro in the garden that is already at the location, and trade it with Rockaway Taco for crema.

Come on, we know you can't say you wouldn't want a shredded chipotle chicken, pickled red onion and cilantro crema pizza after a day on the beach.

Potato chips are a beach food in a way that pizza never, ever will be. That said, we don't see any reason why crumbled chips on top of a pie wouldn't give pizza a little bit of a nudge toward the water, do you?! It's already been established that crispy chips make a sandwich awesome, and we think they'd have the same affect on a pizza, especially one loaded with sweaty meat and cheese.

Beach pizza topping #3: hot dogs

Hot dogs are just one of those foods that appeal to both foodies and non-foodies alike. Everyone loves a snappy dog. When it comes to beach food, and summer food in general, not much tops a 100% beef frankfurter. Roberta's could take it's high-minded ingredients and let them fall by the wayside just this one time, we think. Chop the dog up crudely and throw it on top of a pie with some jalapenos and mozz, and you've got something that screams summer fun.

Beach pizza topping #4: tuna

This one's a little controversial, and not just because the tuna population is under threat. Fish on pizza (anchovies not withstanding) is contentious, but we think in the summer, there's not much better than a cool, fresh ceviche or raw fish thinly sliced and seasoned. By serving a pie with tuna, scallions and maybe some lemongrass or soy, Roberta's could help the sunburned masses cool off before they have to load into the Rockabus for the long ride back home.

Beach pizza topping #5: clams

OK this one's not too original, but clam pies are synonymous with the east coast. Roberta's should have no trouble making a clam pie that's special and all their own. This one, from Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, is a classic: it's a white pie with garlic, fresh clams, parsley, olive oil and parmesan. We think Roberta's could really go crazy with clams to create an updated classic.
