Tribeca Film Festival 2016 free events: Tribeca ReActor, Street Fair, more

Film buffs will flock to lower Manhattan over the course of the next couple of weeks for the annual Tribeca Film Festival, which runs April 14 to 24.

Though tickets for screenings and other high-profile events can be pricey and hard to come by, there are plenty of free events for you true cheapskates out there who want a little taste of the festivities.

If you love your favorite flicks so much that you want to be a part of them, then here's your chance. Track the location of the Tribeca Film Festival ReActor as it makes its way around the city, including a pit stop at the Tribeca on Location Street Fair on Saturday, April 23. Voice and facial recognition, along with motion technology, give you the chance to act out iconic scenes from your favorite movies.

Tribeca Talks: Unscripted & Immersive at Samsung 837

Stop by one or all of the editions of the Tribeca Talks series, taking place this weekend at Samsung 837, a technology playground and cultural hub. And while you're there, take part in such experiential elements as a virtual reality tunnel and a large-scale multimedia display.

Behind the scenes: The New York Times' Virtual Reality

Take a trip to Pluto this Thursday evening with the NY Times' virtual reality editorial team. NY Times Magazine editor-in-chief Jake Silverstein, associate editor of digital Sam Dolnick, assistant masthead editor Steve Duenes and NY Times Magazine virtual reality editor Jenna Pirog will discuss and preview clips of "Seeking Pluto's Frigid Heart," a stereoscopic virtual reality experience that features the New Horizons spacecraft.

Making of 'Invasion!' - Exploring Empathy and Agency in VR

Join director Eric Darnell ("Madagascar" movies) and other Baobab Studios executives -- executive producer Maureen Fan, animation supervisor Maciej Gliwa and art director Cody Gramstad -- for a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of their latest animated real-time virtual reality interactive film, "Invasion!" Find out how they created the characters, allow viewers to have a sense of control over the story's direction and more.

LoveTrue director Alma Har'el in conversation with Michael Cera

Actor Michael Cera interviews director Alma Har'el ("Bombay Beach") about her sophomore film, "LoveTrue." Hear Har'el discuss her process and vision as she shares clips from the new film -- a genre-bending documentary featuring the director's unique imagery as she explores stories of true love -- which will premiere at Tribeca's Documentary Competition.

One of the things that attracts viewers to new releases is the cast list. If you're itching for the true TFF experience, here's your chance to snag tickets to some of the festival's screenings on Friday, April 22. Courtesy of AT&T, FREE tickets for all of Friday's screenings are available on a first-come, first-served basis online at Check if a film is playing on April 22 to see if there are still free tickets available.

You can also try rushing a film for free on April 22 by lining up 45 minutes prior to the start time. If ticket holders don't show up, people from the rush line will be admitted.

Bring the whole brood to these two family-friendly events, taking over Greenwich St. on Saturday, April 23. The TFF Street Fair offers workshops, screenings and plenty of "behind the scenes" peeks at filmmaking, gaming, sports and more.

A stop at the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Zone gives you a chance to take part in some sports-related games, demos, performances and giveaways, and perhaps even a glimpse of some of your favorite Big Apple teams and athletes.

If there's something strange in your neighborhood, you know who to call.

Head over to the Tribeca Studios Backlot next Saturday, April 23, -- part of the Tribeca on Location Street Fair -- to celebrate all things "Ghostbusters" where it all began, in the heart of Tribeca. Enjoy a free fan screening of the original, along with a video greeting from the cast of the new film, as well as games, a proton pack training session, ghost stories and a guided tour and photo op at FDNY Ladder 8, Ghostbusters HQ.
