* Several weeks after he disappeared from his habitual haunt in Jefferson Market, Old Timer’s obituary ran on Page 5. The stray mix was “probably the best known cat in Greenwich Village,” although Billy, Minnie and Mr. White were equally popular. Old Timer was a nightly fixture as Emily Brumeister’s restaurant on Perry St. where he would arrive punctually at 5:30 and be served by the owner herself by 5:40.
* Eleanor Roosevelt attended a 250-person reception making her an honorary member of the Pen and Brush Club on Memorial Day. Taking her leave from the ceremony, she stopped to sign an autograph for Camilla Flemming, then 12, who was a sixth-grader at P.S. 41. Flemming asked her grandmother to allow her to wait outside the clubhouse in hopes of seeing the first lady. Flemming told The Villager, “I have read about Mrs. Roosevelt and her gracious way of treating people, especially children. I found out that she was just as nice as I expected she would be.”
