Police precincts across the city held Night Out Against Crime events on the evening of Tues., Aug. 7. Mayor Mike Bloomberg made the rounds of precincts where officers have been killed over the past year. His last stop was Father Demo Square in Greenwich Village’s Sixth Precinct, where Auxiliary Officers Eugene Marshalik and Nicholas Pekearo were slain in March while trying to stop a crazed gunman who had already killed Alfredo Romero Morales, an employee at DeMarco’s pizzeria on W. Houston St. Above left, the mayor presented Theresa Shortell, the Sixth Precinct’s commanding officer, with a proclamation declaring Aug. 7 Night Out Against Crime night in the precinct. Shortell had just recently been promoted to inspector, the department’s highest rank short of chief, and everyone was congratulating her. Although horses generally only live to about age 20 or 21, Resty is 23 and Fred is 22. The same night, the precinct also cooked dinner for the seniors at the Caring Community at nearby Our Lady of Pompei.
