Almost Abing-done

Gone are the children’s swings and cracked asphalt at Abingdon Sq. on Hudson St. and Eighth Ave., replaced by new green lawns and plantings — fenced off by bollards and chains — and fancy bluestone paving. The renovated park is set to open soon and has generally been receiving favorable reviews from Villagers. However, some critics still complain that the old park was better and, what’s more, that the renovation cost too much. As part of the work, the statue of the W.W. I “Doughboy” was moved from its former spot in the park near W. 12th St. to a more central location.
