Minors — Blue Jays vs. Orioles
The minors division Blue Jays capitalized on solid defense and no errors to win 15-3 against the Orioles. Capturing their fourth consecutive victory, the Blue Jays were led by strong hitting from Rahul Khana who picked up a single, two doubles and a triple. Jess Coleman, Alex Wainger and Darby Northington also contributed three hits each. Michael O’Connor pitched his best game of the season giving up no runs in two innings of work.
Junior Minors — Twins vs. Rangers
The Rangers John Zito connected for a grand slam homer while the Twins rallied mightily in a well-played game.
Majors— Giants vs. Reds
The Major league Giants defeated the Reds in an exciting game Sunday afternoon. In a battle that came down to the final out in the final inning, Jake Goodman (3 for 4, 2 R.B.I.) hit the game winning single with Max Sternberg (3 for 4, 1 run scored) on second. Max had hit a double with 2 outs in the 6th inning to extend the inning. The Reds had come back with 3 runs in the top of the 6th to tie the game off the eventual winning pitcher, Brandon Diaz. Diaz, while giving up the runs, still pitched well, picking up his first win of the season, going 2 innings and striking out 6. Sam Gilberg continued his exceptional year, striking out 7 while only walking 1, in four innings of work. It was a solid game from both teams that all the kids should be proud of.
Majors — Astros vs. Cubs
Led by the pitching of JJ Franco, the majors division Astros defeated the Cubs 13-6 in the first game of their Sunday doubleheader. Franco struck out the first 10 batters, yielding no hits and one walk, helping his team to an 11-0 lead after four innings. Jake Shapiro and Cal Cook led the Astros’ offense as Cook went 3 for 3 and Shapiro went 2 for 3 with a homerun and a double. Mike Galindo picked up his second homerun of the season. The Cubs could not rally however despite some timely hitting and the defensive efforts of Vin Licata behind the plate.
Majors — Astros vs. Rockies
After going scoreless during the first two innings, the Astros cruised to a 15-5 victory over the Rockies following a third inning grand slam by Luke Shapiro. Nikhil Teckchandani and Cal Cook fueled the Astros’ offense as each player went 3 for 3. Sam Fishman, Wyatt Leach, Tim Rossi, and JJ Franco each added two hits to the potent Astros offense. Zane Holmes looked to further the Astros’ lead with a deep blast to centerfield before he was robbed by the Rockies’ Kyle Maer. The Rockies held the Astros scoreless the first two innings through defensive infield play and jumped to an early lead on Felix Chmiel’s base hit and timely steals. The Rockies defense was solid as they turned three double plays on the day. Shapiro pitched five innings and struck out 10 batters.
