The first snow hit Battery Park City and the rest of Lower Manhattan Friday morning around 7 a.m. With the city preparing for a blizzard of as much as 10 – 14 inches. B.P.C. Authority officials said they’ve been making storm preparations for over 48 hours.
“We will handle whatever nature sends our way,” said Demetri Boutris, the authority’s president.
Abby Ehrlich, the director of programming for the B.P.C. Parks Conservancy, said the blizzard will absolutely not affect the free valentine-making workshop scheduled for Saturday between 10:30 a.m. and noon at 6 River Terrace.
“It’s on, no matter the weather,” she said. “Love is in the air!”
Alex Mann who handles public relations for Poets House also said that a lecture by Allan Kornblum scheduled for 3 p.m. tomorrow at 10 River Terrace will proceed as scheduled.
The authority’s Boutris asked residents and others to call 212-417-3100 for any issues related to Battery Park City parks and go to for www.nyc.gov for the latest city blizzard news.
Mayor Mike Bloomberg, in a morning storm briefing Feb. 8, also pointed to the city’s web site and said people could call 311, but in the case of a true emergency they should call 911.
“Stay off the city streets, stay out of your cars, and stay in your homes while the worst of this storm is on us,” the mayor added. “That’s for your own protection during potentially hazardous outdoor conditions. It is why we’ve canceled all Friday after school activities, including Public School Athletic League games. Saturday classes and activities at public schools have also been canceled.
“Staying off the streets will make it easier for City workers to clear the streets of snow so that emergency vehicles can use them.”
He said forecasters believe the heaviest snow will be 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Fri, Feb. 8.
