Bus crash on Varick

An M20 bus traveling Downtown on Varick St. struck an SUV that was crossing at Watts St. just at 10:00 a.m. on Sept. 11. The SUV then spun, hit and slightly damaged a small sedan.

James Anyansi, spokesperson for New York City Transit, said that the cause of the accident is still under investigation, but Melissa Jakubowski, a Gramercy Park resident and driver of the sedan, told Downtown Express that “the bus ran a red light.”

The SUV was heavily damaged and the driver side airbag was deployed. Levar Ambroise, the SUV’s driver, sustained a thumb injury and was treated at the scene.

On impact, some bus riders were thrown from their seats. One woman who suffered a gash on her arm was treated at the scene and sent to the hospital. She, along with two friends, had arrived in New York from Belgium yesterday for a 9-day trip in the United States. The three were on their way to go to Ellis Island.
