C.B. 1 to Coast Guard: Don’t abandon harbor

The federal government’s plan to move a local Coast Guard patrol to Boston could make New York Harbor less safe, Community Board 1 said last week.

The board unanimously opposed the plan in a strongly worded resolution Feb. 23. Stationing the U.S. Coast Guard’s Maritime Safety and Security Team in Boston would unacceptably delay the response to emergencies in New York, the board said.

If the federal government has to make cuts, the consolidated Coast Guard patrol should be located in New York, not Boston, because of this city’s higher threat level, the board said.

New York’s 90-member Maritime Safety and Security Team has been stationed in the harbor since 9/11. U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer also opposes the cut.
