Albert Capsouto, co-owner of Capsouto Frères restaurant in Tribeca for 30 years, died Tuesday morning at the age of 53, just two months after being diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Capsouto was an advocate for Lower Manhattan’s small businesses, especially after 9/11, and he served on Community Board 1 for over 19 years. He and his brothers also served free food to rescue workers in the days after the attack.
The community board will discuss ways to memorialize Capsouto at the next board meeting Jan. 26, said Julie Menin, chairperson of the board.
“He leaves a hole in the heart of the Tribeca community, and he really will leave one forever,” Menin said.
The funeral was held Wednesday at Riverside Chapel.
Next week’s Downtown Express will include a full obituary.
