Pedestrian killed
A 48-year-old pedestrian was killed when a car hit him shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 while he was crossing Church St. at the Duane St. intersection.
Ernesto Torres, of 334 E. 108th St. in the Ben Franklin houses, was taken to NYU Downtown Hospital where he was declared dead at 3:40 a.m. Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
A tenant at Tribeca Tower, at 105 Duane St., who declined to give his name, said that Torres had been a handyman in the building for about 10 years and that he was crossing the street to buy a cup of coffee when he was hit.
“He was a super guy, a friendly guy. He would go out of his way to help people in the building,” the tenant said. He added that Torres has three children. Tenants and the building owner, Related Companies, are looking to raise money to help the family, the tenant said.
Party heist
A resident of 90 Gold St. in Southbridge Towers called police when he discovered that jewelry valued at $17,500 was stolen from his apartment during a big party he was holding on Tuesday evening, Oct. 5. A bracelet with 80 diamonds totaling seven carats, a watch with a diamond bezel, a 2.5 carat diamond engagement ring, a diamond pendant, a Tiffany money clip, and $1,500 in cash were stolen, police said.
Delayed M.T.A. theft
The supervisor of a construction job in the main office of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority at 2 Broadway told police on Oct. 5 that thieves had made off with a 1,000-ft. reel of high-tech computer cable valued at $20,000 sometime during the previous seven weeks. There was no sign of forced entry to the place where the cable was kept, police said.
One for the books
Workers at the Scholastic Book store at 557 Broadway between Prince and Spring Sts. told police that a thief made off with a laptop computer valued at $2,500 from an eighth floor office at about 7 p.m. Mon., Oct. 4. The thief apparently carried the computer past employees and patrons in the ground floor store but might have been recorded by a surveillance camera. Detectives at the First Precinct are looking at the store video tapes.
Cut-purse
A man who carried his personal effects in a case attached to his belt was jostled at the corner of Maiden La. and Broadway at about 8:30 a.m., Wed., Sept. 29 and discovered the case was slashed and the Palm Pilot he kept in it was stolen, police said.
Pocket picked
A Florida man told police that his wallet with credit cards and $20 cash was lifted from him while he was in the office tower at 17 State St. on Saturday morning, Oct. 5. He discovered that unauthorized charges of $190 had been made on one of his cards when he cancelled it, police said.
Kung Fu loss
A patron of a Kung Fu studio at 385 Broadway near White St. had her knapsack with her $500 designer wallet, her platinum wedding band, driver’s license and other personal papers stolen on the morning of Sept. 29 while attending a class, police said. The victim told police she left her zippered knapsack in an unsecured place before going to the class.
Not for sleeping
A Brooklyn man, 32, who fell asleep on a northbound No. 1 train Wednesday evening, Oct. 6, woke up at 6:39 p.m. when a thief stole his bag and fled from the train at the Houston St. station, police said. The bag contained clothes and personal papers. The thief was described as a light-complexioned black man about 5 ft. 6 in. tall.

A thief who lurked among the people in a crowded photo session at noon on Sun., Oct. 3, in a studio at 595 Broadway between Prince and Houston Sts. made off with a victim’s high-tech wrist watch valued at $10,000, police said.
