Nicholas Kai, 5, ate some birthday cake and helped the City Parks Dept. celebrate the 100th anniversary of Seward Park last Thursday. The Lower East Side park, which opened in 1903, was the city’s first municipally-built playground and was named after William Henry Seward, former governor of New York and Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. He negotiated America’s purchase of Alaska.
