Soccer games heat up in colder weather

A hard-fought weekend of soccer yielded a number of tie games. The season is winding down with an exciting two weekends of friendly competition left.

Junior 6

Arsenal defeated Everton, 4-0. Despite save after save by goalie Simon Blank, and formidable defense by Nick Winokur, the Everton team was unable to keep the aggressive offense of the Arsenal team down.  Margaret Matthews scored first, followed by two goals by Dario Flores.  The Everton team mixed it up after halftime, and even though Everton goalie Tyler Rohan made several diving saves, Elias Griffin scored with a phantom assist by Jacob Roter, whose skillful dribbling had kept consistent pressure on the Everton defense. The Everton team still had fun, and is playing more cohesively each week under coach Liz Lamere.

West Ham, down two players, tied Bolton, 2-2. Bolton dominated the first half with two goals, but a West Ham hustle in the second half brought two goals by Jack McGreevy to settle the score at even. Oscar Sullivan played his best game, assisting on many attacks and simultaneously running back and defending. Otilia Olmedo-Young played more amazing defense by holding back and helping the goalie Lucy Winokur the entire game.

Junior 7

Charlton defeated Manchester United, 2-0, with a goal in each half. Manchester players Alston Biggs, Fischer Bodwell, Anthony O’Donnell and Taylor White mounted a tough defense against the charging Charlton offense. Despite many stopped shots and diving saves by goalies Wyatt Acridi and Michael Shorris, Charlton managed to take the victory.

Blackburn defeated the Tottenham Hotspurs, 3-1. Uriah Frederick was phenomenal at midfield for Blackburn, scoring two for his team. Mateo Flores also kicked in a solid strike for the third goal.  Goalies Otis Hatfield and Dylan Pryor played key Blackburn defense, fending off several well struck Tottenham attempts.  The exceptional Tottenham goalie consistently stopped attacks from Blackburn.

Major 8

Bologna and Parma played a scoreless tie game on Saturday. Bologna goalies Anabelle Sosa and Ciera Schrippa each played one half shutting out Parma’s offense. The defensive anchors for Bologna were Richard King and Duncan Kimmel, who both thwarted multiple Parma attacks. Zisis Gribas, Madison Marino and Marina Ouranitsas provided the offensive punch with some great opportunities.

Major 9

Livingston defeated Motherwell, 4-3, in a Saturday afternoon game. It was a close match with the lead seesawing back and forth. Eli Jossen scored three and Michael Porter scored one, both for Livingston. Aren Gallagher and Stefan Thorstein scored the goals for Motherwell.

Major 10

Sevilla and Malaga tied, 1-1, in a well-played game from beginning to end. Once again Sevilla played exceptional defense from goalie Joshua Colon and the team’s “Fab Four” defensive line: Sarah Fadel, Miguel Leiro, Oren Shore and Olivia Lautin. Both David Hersey and Jonah Yang played super in midfield to help the Sevilla defense clear out the ball.

Major 11

Monaco played a hard Sunday afternoon game against Bordeaux. Monaco took the lead 1-0 on a goal by Jackson McGonagle only to see the game tied up a few minutes later. With less than a minute left in the game McGonagle scored again. The Monaco defense led by goalkeeper Kristin White played a tough game and held on to win the game 2-1.

Nice tied Paris SG, 4-4, on Sunday. Owen Kimmel and David Benjamin shared goaltending duties for Nice, each playing one half. Their teammate Vin Licatta played a strong game at midfield and as stopper while Sean Wils created great opportunities from midfield and scored a goal.  Kimmel also contributed two goals in the second half from the left wing position. Wyatt Leach and Sam Youkilis also put in strong performances offensively and defensively.

Senior 12-13

Dallas Burn defeated friendly rivals the Revolution, 6-1, on Sunday. Brian Chee and Luke Soloway each scored a goal in the first half to bring Burn up, 2-0. In the second half, Gabe Cook scored twice and Scarlett McCalman and Jake Donnenfeld each added a goal. This is the first time this season Burn scored more than three goals. Ben Lenovitz and Luke Smith-Stevens, a regular starter in goal who also plays in the field, lead the Burn effort with strong play in midfield.

Crew defeated DC United, 8-1, on Saturday. Crew players Julian Lombardi, Robin Campbell and goalkeeper Charles Chan played outstanding defense. Lucas Brody scored 3 goals, Max Davis scored 2 and Zack Karson, Justinian Montaperto and Alex Wedmore each scored 1 goal for the unstoppable Crew offense.

Blackburn’s Thomas Caruso and Tottenham’s Marcus Chan go for the ball.
