Dirty bomb delivery?

In a moment of levity, police checked a cooler on the back of a moped at Canal St. and Bowery at the entrance to the Manhattan Bridge on Friday night, Aug. 10. An unsubstantiated threat of a dirty bomb, reported via an Israeli Web site, brought police to that location and on the following day to Broadway and Canal St. On Saturday, police with radiation detectors manned some of the checkpoints. Despite the checkpoints on Friday and Saturday, Mayor Bloomberg said on Friday that the threat was “unverified” and that the city’s terrorism alert remained at orange, one phase below red, the same it has been since Sept. 11, 2001.
