B.M.C.C. is O.K. with U.K.
Antonio Pérez, Borough of Manhattan Community College president, will receive the Award for Contributions to Global Education from the City College of Birmingham, England at an Oct. 2 ceremony in Birmingham.
Pérez will give a presentation on leadership during the World Trade Center attack to the faculty and staff at the City College of Birmingham later on Oct.2 and on Oct. 3 he will speak on the same subject at the College of Nottingham.
The B.M.C.C. president will meet on Oct. 1 with Kalid Mamood, a Member of Parliament from Birmingham, at the House of Commons. Later that day, Pérez will address a gathering of college and university executives from around the United Kingdom on recruiting and retaining minorities in leadership positions in higher education.
Art of the deal
The Downtown Alliance last week began a program to attract art galleries to Lower Manhattan with publication of a guidebook mailed to 800 art galleries. The follow-up to the mailing will include an outreach to galleries in Soho and West Chelsea coordinated by Susan B. Anthony, a real estate broker who played a key role in establishing West Chelsea and the Gansevoort Market areas as gallery destinations.
“Bringing art galleries to Lower Manhattan will help fill vacant commercial space,” said Shirley Jaffe, Alliance vice president for economic development.
C.B. 1 meetings
The upcoming week’s schedule of Community Board 1 committee meetings is as follows:
On Thursday, Oct. 2, the Tribeca Committee will meet at 6 p.m. in room 709, 49-51 Chambers St., to discuss a City Planning application to allow residential conversion of the cellar, first floor and second floor of 448 Greenwich St.; a proposed new residential building at 500 Canal St.; an application for a sidewalk cafe for 340 Greenwich St.; and liquor license applications for 31 N. Moore St. and 75 Murray St.
On Tuesday, Oct. 2, the Battery Park City Committee will meet at 6 p.m. in the Hallmark building at 455 N. End Avenue to discuss the role of the park enforcement police in the Battery Park City community and traffic issues in Battery Park City.
On Thursday, Oct. 9, the World Trade Center Redevelopment Committee will meet at 6:00 p.m. in Assemblymember Sheldon Silver’s office, 250 Broadway, Assembly Hearing Room, 19th floor to hear a presentation by the M.T.A. on the Fulton St. transportation hub.
