Last weekend saw great sports action and good friendly competition in the Downtown Soccer League.
Junior 6 Division
West Ham defeated Liverpool, 4-1. Jack McGreevy scored all of West Ham’s goals and Liam Fuerst made a great save at the end of the second half. Tara Venkat and Oscar Sullivan defended their zones firmly for solid West Ham defense.
Minor 8 Division
Verona won its first game over Parma, 2-0, after finishing just short of a victory in its first two games. John Barbieri, Louis Moreschi and Max Sperling led the team to their success. Chynna Basso and Michael Marino each scored goals, and Anthony Marino and Andrew Jansen played well in the nets to keep Parma off the board. Michael DeMaria led tight defense while Skirmane Chahu, Nicollete Catona and Rachel Licata also played well in the victory for Verona.
Minor 9 Division
Motherwell defeated Dundee, 2-1, and Livingston, 6-2, and tied Celtic, 3-3.
Major 11 Division
Lyons tied Bourdeaux, 2-2. Lyons’ Miguel Duran scored, and Julius Drattell-Moren made an incredible corner goal assisted by Harrison Laifer. Their teammate Christin Hu proved herself to be a very valuable goalie. Alex Lordahl, Daniel Anglin and Michael McGarry lead Lyons’ great defense and had strong support from Sam Jossen, Rahul Khanna and Alekandra Martin.
Senior 12-13 Division
The Rapids tied D.C. United, 1-1, in an exciting game. Woody Herman scored the Rapids’ goal off a shot by Kyle Macrae in the first minute of the game, but D.C. United came back later in the first half. Goalie Seppi Kushner played an outstanding game for the Rapids. The second half remained scoreless despite excellent playing and near-goals from both teams.
The Metro Stars defeated Revolution, 3-1, in a closely fought contest. Sam Gilberg and Nikhil Teckchandani, who was later injured and carried off the field, scored the goals for the Metro Stars in the first half. Their teammates, Marlon Geshlider, Eren Adriansen, Sarah Boyd, Carzi Noel, Rosie Seidl Chodosh and Sterling Chapman played an outstanding game and Corey Greenblatt defended the goal masterfully. In the second half, Revolution played tight defense and held the Metro Stars scoreless, thanks to Revolution goalie Jimmy Rogers and fullbacks Vitaly Kahn, Jamie Janovsky, Woobers Celony and Harry D’Agostino. Jordan Segal scored Revolution’s only goal with strong offensive support from his teammates, Bahij Chancey, Michael Galindo, Emma Vasta-Kuby, William Sinn, James Slade and Maddie Spates.
Crew beat Fire in a well-played match. The game was much closer than its 6-2 final score. Crew only led by a point for most of the second half until scoring three goals in the last five minutes. Lucas Brody scored three goals, and Zach Carson, Max Davis, and Robin Campbell each contributed a goal for Crew.
Dallas Burn lost a close and exciting match to L.A. Galaxy, 3-2. A second half comeback brought Burn two goals. Ben Lenovitz scored the first on a rebound from his own free kick. He later assisted Xavier Garcia with the second goal. Scarlett McCalman and Yasmine Wolf played great defense for Burn.
