Wrapping up a stellar indoor track and field season, the Manhattan Academy of Technology Dragons boys and girls teams competed in the March 24 Jamboree at the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in Washington Heights, N.Y. The meet, which included 2,000 children from over 40 public schools the city, was the largest Jamboree ever.
Several Dragons put in superlative performances. In the 55-meter dash, Natalie Lee, Miranda Cotto, Raven Marcano, Selena Sustache, Michelle Lopez, Ashley Thomas and Anthony Otero all came in first or second in their respective heats. In the 200-meter sprint, Kaylee Cimino took second place in her race, while Daniella Azulai won her heat. Nick Karam placed third in a very tough 400-meter run.
In the field competition, Brandon Burgos came in second in the long jump, with teammate Taylor Myers close behind in third.
In the highlight of the day, the 6th grade girls relay team of Patty Rosa, Miranda Cotto, Kaylee Cimino and Daniella Azulai won their 4 x 200 meter relay race in a new school record time of 2 minutes 10 seconds.
“I am very proud of my students, not only because they ran well, but because they supported each other,” said Dragons coach John DeMatteo. “In the end, it’s the meaning of teamwork that matters the most.”
