Last week was Deputy Inspector Kevin Fitzgerald’s last on the job as commanding officer of Greenwich Village’s 6th Police Precinct. Fitzgerald, 41, cleaned out his desk and retired from the force last Friday, having served sufficient years and overtime to meet the Police Department’s retirement benefit requirements.
During his three years leading the 6th, Fitzgerald twice put in place special initiatives, once in the months following 9/11 when residents complained that quality of life crimes were on the rise, and more recently after a murder on W. 10th St. connected with the West Village’s transgender nightlife scene. Each time, Fitzgerald brought extra manpower and units to bear to help address quality of life problems.
As of Tuesday, Community Affairs Officer Tim Duffy said the precinct hadn’t been notified who will replace Fitzgerald, but they expect an announcement within the week.
