In another freakish auto accident at what has become one of Downtown’s most dangerous intersections, two yellow cabs collided at Elizabeth and East Houston Sts. early Saturday morning, about 2 a.m. One of the cabs hit a parked car on Elizabeth St., which in turn knocked over a parked motorcycle. The cab then mowed down the No Parking sign to which the group Visual Resistance had locked a white memorial “ghost bike” for Andrew Ross Morgan, 25, who was killed by a truck at the same spot last month while biking to work. Two patrons were reportedly sitting on a bench in front of Tom & Jerry’s bar at 288 Elizabeth St. when the smashup occurred and were nearly hit. A passenger in one of the cabs is said to have sustained a minor injury. Possibly contributing to both accidents, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is working on a subway ventilation project on Houston St. between the Bowery and Elizabeth St., which has taken a traffic lane away on either side of the major cross-town artery and caused decreased visibility in the intersection for turning traffic.
