Spencer still teaching us

Re “Leading HIV Treatment Activist Dies at 44” (obit, Jan. 9):
Spencer’s concerns with the mental and physical health of gay men are spot-on. As he pointed out, the incidence of depression among gay men is a multiple of the general population. Today, there a lot more openly gay people in the biomedical community than when TAG, ACT UP, and amfAR began. It is reasonable to assume that a lot of gay and/ or gay-friendly people will take up research and treatment issues of this sort. Maybe the model has not changed: target things, like ACT UP and TAG, toward finding ways to better the mental health of gay people.
