Hot call on Sixth Ave.

fire-2005-05-24_z

Last Friday, just before 7 p.m., firetrucks from Ladders 5 and 9 and Engines 24 and 33 converged on Sixth Ave. south of Eighth St. Smoke was emanating from an outer wall behind a public phone between the entrances of Pizzeria Uno and Petland on the west side of Sixth Ave. Firefighters tore away at the wall, removing pieces of wooden molding around the door of the restaurant and pieces of the wall behind the phone. Then they poured water into the hole. Battalion Chief Grogan said it appeared someone had tossed a lit cigarette behind the phone and it fell into the wall. There were no injuries and both businesses continued to operate without interruption.
