A fire that started on the fourth floor of a five-story Chelsea parking garage at 7:28 a.m. last Wednesday, grew to a four-alarm fire at 9:33 a.m., bringing 168 firefighters and 39 fire trucks, engines and vehicles to the garage at 15th St. between Ninth and 10th Aves. across the street from the Chelsea Market.
It took six hours to bring the fire under control at 1:20 p.m., according to the Fire Department.
Several firefighters sustained injuries, including two who suffered minor burns and three who had back injuries, according to the department.
Firefighters initially entered the building but retreated afraid that vehicles’ gas tanks would explode. Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions from inside the garage.
Subways bypassed the 14th St. Eighth Ave. I.N.D. station briefly because of smoke from the nearby fire.
