The new dog run for small dogs only in Washington Sq. Park was formally dedicated last week at a ceremony at which the run was named for Robin Kovary, renowned dog trainer and dog-run advocate. Kovary, who died in 2001 at the age 54, was instrumental in creating Washington Sq.’s first dog run and also helped establish other dog runs around Manhattan. She was responsible for starting the pet therapy programs at St. Luke’s and St. Vincent’s hospitals and the Young Adult Institute. Aubrey Lees, former chairperson of Community Board 2, above left, with her dachshunds Harry and Eli, championed the creation of the park’s new run where small dogs no longer need fear being knocked about and trampled by bigger breeds.
